I had the pleasure of writing an orchestral arrangement together with Berlin-based Jordanian songwriter Zazuka for her song ‚Hadeel‘. We recorded it with the renowned Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg in their historical studio in Potsdam. It is of relevance to mention that many great film scores were recorded there and Zazuka wanted me to bring this cinematic feel to the song.
‚Hadeel‘ is a ballad that explores themes of childhood, family and sacrifice. A poetic Arabic text is set in a deeply atmospheric arrangement. ‚Hadeel‘ is also the Arabic word for the “cooing” sound of pigeons. It draws on a childhood memory of Zazuka talking with her father, and the lullabies he sang to her.
